WiMAX 4G Coming to New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles in 2010

The next-next generation U.S. wireless technology is preparing itself for primetime in major metropolitan areas. New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles will each have 4G WiMAX by the end of 2010.

WiMAX will serve as Sprint’s fourth generation (4G) wireless option. Verizon and AT&T have both selected long term evolution (LTE) as their 4G solutions.

Sprint has notably allied itself with Clearwire, Comcast and Time Warner Cable to build the country’s WiMAX infrastructure. Comcast and Time Warner Cable will each augment their cable service by providing 4G wireless access to their customers.

New York will be the first of the trio to get WiMAX on November 1, with service arriving in Los Angeles on December 1 and San Francisco before the end of the year.
